What is SEO?

This is quickly becoming one of the most common questions around the entrepreneurial circuit online. With options such as Shopify and WordPress, the barrier of entry is minimized so much that it becomes negligible. The only determining factor becomes an internet connection.

So now, you’ve got your business up and running and you’re ready to take in customers.

Now, if you’re a brick and mortar business and have rent due, what are you going to do in order to drive traffic?

You need to advertise or get the word out that you’re open for business, right?

The idea applies the same way for an online business. Now, there are many forms of traditional marketing and advertising methods, from digital to print media.

In my opinion, when someone poses the question, What is SEO? I’m more inclined to discuss what isn’t considered SEO as I find that to be more pertinent information for most seeking an honest answer they can derive value from. Here’s the reason why. Most people end up hearing about SEO from someone without much experience in the field that SEO plays in to begin with.

With that said,

SEO is NOT the following:

  • A get rich quick scheme
  • A sure-fire way to rank #1 in Google
  • A way to get Free Traffic

Let me address each point quickly:

SEO is NOT a get rich quick scheme. Now that doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there that use SEO in order to pull off get rich quick schemes.

More on that later.

SEO is not a sure-fire way to rank first in the search engine results and that’s crucial to remember. Now that doesn’t mean that with the correct technique and proper amount of effort coupled with an intelligent strategy you can’t achieve the first rank in Google.

Moving on.

SEO is NOT a source of Free Traffic. What SEO can do for you is allow you to tap into multiple Traffic sources through targeted content marketing campaigns for next to nothing, depending on how much you value your time.

So WTF is SEO?

SEO is simply a part of any holistic marketing plan for any successful business in 2016. As with any operation in any business there isn’t only one method to achieve results, rather it’s a cohesive effort between all departments that leads to success, and ultimately, what we all want, PROFIT.

2 Feet Solutions Explains SEO

Dolla dolla bills y’all

SEO is Search Engine Optimization.

Which boils itself down to two things.

Content + Links

That’s it.

Content breaks down into:

Quality creative work, such as blog posts, articles, guest blog posts, images, videos, podcasts, e-books, I mean there are so many options in today’s world that all you need to do is just care about putting out good content.

Give people shit they care about, things they can derive some sort of benefit from.

Listen, everyone’s selfish, everyone wants something, so give your target market what they want. Even at the cost of giving away your own “secrets”.

*GASP*

Now, I’m not telling you to give away your secret formula for the world to see, although that’s not always a bad idea. What I’m saying is be willing and capable of documenting what it is you do, and do it in a fashion that really brings out the culture of your outfit. This way your target market will get to know your company on a personal level, this creates a greater emotional attachment and builds stronger relationships and much, MUCH, better clients.

You reap what you sow. 🙂

Now, what does great content lead to?

Well, it leads to…

LINKS!

Yay, here’s a cookie!

Now, simmer down.

Great content isn’t the only way to build links. What great content does is give you the opportunity to go “viral”, depending on what industry you’re in. Ultimately though it enables you to build reach within your industry and the opportunity to position yourself as an expert.

This is only one side of the equation though. Now you have to find out how to build high quality links from trusted websites and pages with strong authority status with the search engines, especially Google.

How do you build quality backlinks?

Content, Citations, Press Releases

Create great content and you will get guest blog posts with some outreach, you will get your material shared, simple as that.

When you create content you need to use platforms to distribute your content on. Many of these can be stacked with their authority stemming from being Google owned properties.

Social Media platforms such as YouTube, Blogger, and Google+, for instance.

Not to mention the capabilities of ranking multiple YouTube videos for your targeted keywords.

Next up you have Citations.

What are Citations?

Well, they’re made up of two categories.

Structured Citations and Unstructured Citations

Structured Citations are what you would see on Directory Listings, like the Yellow Pages, Yelp, those are considered structured citations. It’s basically anywhere online that you can input the following information into a directory of sorts:

Business Name
Address
Phone Number
Website

Next up is unstructured Citations which are essentially areas online where you can put that information, but it’s not populated into a directory based on those variable inputs.

For example, a YouTube description with your Business Name and Info would be considered an Unstructured Citation.

Still very powerful, and can be applied to many avenues and platforms.

Next up you have Press Releases.

Now these are interesting. These are one of the few things that makes what we do feel like traditional advertising, Mad Men style, except without the cigarettes and sexism.

Where you purchase your Press Releases from is very important. Not withstanding the quality of the written content that makes up your Press Release, the data aggregators that your information is sent to is very important.

What are data aggregators?

Well, to keep it simple, they’re the big data hubs and data centres that push out info to all of the big information giants, like Google, Yahoo! (Verizon?), and Bing.

Anyone can write up a Press Release, it’s the exposure it gets that matters.

You want your Press Release to get on high quality websites that are authorities in their areas and industries. Not only that you want these sites to be indexed by the search engines, or else it’s all meaningless.

The service you choose to push out your Press Release is incredibly important to the exposure it gets.

Now, you’ve gotten this far, so now I’ll spill the beans as to what SEO really, really, is.

SEO is about a Positive ROI, EVERY TIME!

We’re talking about tangible 5X-10X increases in a number of factors including:

  • # of Leads Generated
  • Profit Increase
  • Increased Conversions
  • Increased Traffic
  • Increase in your client’s Life Time Value.

That’s what true SEO is all about.

Well, this is what SEO is in my opinion in a quick boiled down summarized effort.

Now, many will want to disagree or some might say I missed out certain aspects or points.

The truth is, there’s no way I’ll be able to fully explain what SEO fully encompasses in less than a thousand words, because you don’t care about the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition for what search engine optimization is.
